Royal Mail API Integration Cost: What to Expect in the UK

27 April 2026 4 min read

Royal Mail’s API products are free to use — there’s no licence fee for accessing the Click & Drop API, Pro Shipping or Mailmark. The cost of integration is purely the development work: building the connection to your platform, implementing service selection logic, generating and routing labels, automating manifest submission, and handling all the edge cases correctly. That development cost ranges from around £995 for a Click & Drop integration to £1,995 for Pro Shipping with complex service selection and multi-warehouse routing.

The three build tiers

Click & Drop integration: £995

A Click & Drop integration connects your platform or WooCommerce store to the Click & Drop API, automates shipment creation and label generation when orders are placed, writes tracking numbers back to your order records, and submits the end-of-day manifest automatically. Service selection is based on a defined ruleset — weight bands, order value thresholds, delivery speed options chosen at checkout.

This tier is right for businesses sending up to approximately 1,000 items per day who need to remove the manual labour from their daily despatch process. Timeline: one to two weeks from scoping to handover.

Pro Shipping integration: £1,995

Pro Shipping is Royal Mail’s higher-volume API for businesses needing more direct control over shipment creation, label formats and service selection. The integration involves more complex authentication (OAuth 2.0), greater flexibility in how labels are generated and formatted, and typically more sophisticated service selection logic. Businesses at this tier are often integrating with a bespoke OMS or warehouse management system rather than WooCommerce.

International shipping requirements — EORI numbers, IOSS, customs commodity codes — are typically more involved at this tier and add to the build scope. Timeline: two to three weeks.

Mailmark and enterprise builds: from £2,995

Mailmark integration is for large-scale operations processing more than 1,000 items daily. The build involves Royal Mail approval (which you need to have in hand before development starts), more complex barcode and label generation, discounted postage rate calculation, and typically full integration with an enterprise OMS or fulfilment system. Timeline: three to four weeks depending on scope.

What drives the cost up

Complex service selection logic. Simple weight-band selection is fast to implement. Multi-factor rules combining weight, dimensions, destination, order value, delivery speed and product type take longer to design and test.

Multi-warehouse routing. Businesses operating from multiple fulfilment locations need routing logic that determines which warehouse ships which order, and potentially different Royal Mail account credentials per location.

International shipping complexity. High volumes of international shipments with varied destination requirements, EORI/IOSS data, customs commodity codes and document generation add meaningful scope to the build.

Legacy or bespoke OMS. Integrating with a well-documented modern platform is fast. Integrating with a legacy order management system with limited APIs, restricted access, or unusual data structures takes longer.

Thermal printer integration. Automatic label printing to thermal printers requires additional work to configure the print routing, label format conversion and printer communication, but the operational benefit — labels printing automatically without any clicks — is significant for high-volume operations.

What drives the cost down

WooCommerce or clean modern platform. WooCommerce with standard order data is a well-understood integration target. Clean REST APIs on the receiving platform make the build faster.

Single warehouse, domestic only. UK-only despatch from a single location with straightforward service selection is the simplest scope and produces the fastest, most economical build.

Credentials already in hand. Royal Mail API access requires registration and approval. If your Click & Drop developer access is already approved when the build starts, development can begin immediately. If credentials are still pending, the build starts once they arrive.

Ongoing costs

Royal Mail’s API products are free to use once you’re registered. The postage costs on each shipment are exactly the same as they would be through the Click & Drop web interface — the API doesn’t add a surcharge. An optional retainer of £49/month covers monitoring, credential rotation and minor updates if Royal Mail changes their API endpoints or authentication requirements.
