Why Shopify
Shopify handles hosting, security, SSL and card payment compliance, so you don't have to. Payments through Shopify Payments, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay work from day one, every theme works on a phone, and shipping, stock and orders are all built in. The app store covers email marketing, reviews, subscriptions and loyalty schemes. For most businesses that mainly want to sell products, it's the simplest platform to run day to day. See Shopify vs WordPress for a small business.
It isn't right for everyone. If your shop is a small part of a content-heavy site, or you sell bookings, complicated made-to-order products or need full control of the server, WooCommerce can be the better choice. I'll tell you which fits before you spend anything.
Ecommerce website design in Blackburn
I'm based in Blackburn and build online shops for businesses in Blackburn, Darwen and across Lancashire, as well as the rest of the UK. Everything is sorted by WhatsApp, text or email wherever you are, and the packages and prices are the same. For brochure sites rather than shops, see web design in Blackburn.
Which package
- Starter, from £699 A free Shopify theme set up properly in your branding: logo, colours, fonts and images, up to 10 products, collections and menus, payments, UK shipping zones and the SEO basics. Right for a new shop that wants to start selling quickly without paying for design it doesn't need yet.
- Professional, from £999 Everything in Starter, plus custom design work in code so the store looks like your brand rather than a template: a custom homepage, five design changes, up to 20 products, email marketing connected, analytics and reviews. Right for an established brand, or a business that knows the look matters to its buyers.
- Custom build, from £1,999 A bespoke Liquid theme for stores that don't fit a template, such as product configurators, complicated variants, multi-currency selling, large catalogues or integrations with stock, warehouse or accounting systems. Migrations from WooCommerce, Magento or Etsy sit here too.
What every store includes
- Payments set up and tested Including Shopify Payments, PayPal and express checkouts, with a real test order before launch
- UK shipping zones and rates that match how you actually send parcels, plus local pickup if you offer it
- Policy pages Including refunds, shipping, privacy and terms, laid out so customers can find them
- A collection structure that makes sense So customers can browse by what they're looking for and Google gets proper category pages to rank
- SEO basics Unique titles and descriptions, clean product URLs, image alt text and the sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- Google Analytics set up so you can see where sales come from
- A handover So you can add products, run a sale and manage orders without needing me
Shopify SEO, done properly
Shopify is good for search out of the box, but most stores waste it. Collection pages are your category landing pages, so each one needs a proper title and an introduction that says what's in it, not just a grid of products. Product descriptions should be written for the product, not copied from the supplier, because the same text on fifty other stores gives Google no reason to choose yours. A short blog that answers buyers' questions earns traffic that ads would otherwise have to pay for.
I set all of that up at launch. For the reasons stores don't show up, read why your Shopify store isn't showing up on Google.
Moving to Shopify
Moving from WooCommerce, Magento or Etsy is mostly careful bookkeeping. Products, variants, images, collections, customers and content are carried across. Every old page address is matched to its new one with a permanent redirect, so links and rankings follow you instead of ending in a 404. Payments, shipping and tax settings are rebuilt and tested before the switch, and the old store stays up until the new one is ready.
Apps and integrations
I'll recommend as few apps as possible, because each one adds cost and can slow the store down. The usual ones are Klaviyo or Mailchimp for email, Judge.me for reviews and ReCharge for subscriptions. When an app doesn't do what you need, such as sending orders to a warehouse or invoices to Xero, that's custom API work, built and quoted separately.
Already have a store that's misbehaving? See Shopify fixes, from £49 per fix.
How it works
- Tell me about your products by WhatsApp, text, email or the form. I'll recommend a package and send a quote within 24 hours.
- Design and build. Theme set up or built, products added, payments and shipping configured.
- Review. You check the store on a preview link, with rounds of changes included.
- Launch. Domain connected, SEO basics and Google Analytics set up, a test order placed, and a handover so you can run it yourself.
