What the Royal Mail API provides.

The Royal Mail API gives businesses programmatic access to Royal Mail’s full shipping infrastructure — creating shipments, generating labels, booking collections, submitting manifests and tracking parcels, all without anyone manually logging into the Royal Mail portal.

A custom integration connects directly to your order management system, WooCommerce store or bespoke platform. When an order is placed, the integration automatically creates the Royal Mail shipment, selects the right service based on your rules, generates and routes the label to your printer, captures the tracking number back to your order record, and submits the end-of-day manifest on a schedule. The entire despatch process runs without manual intervention.

Which Royal Mail API is right for you.

Royal Mail offers several API products depending on your despatch volume and integration requirements. Part of the scoping process is identifying the right one for your business before development begins.

Up to ~1,000/day

Click & Drop API

Best for most ecommerce businesses. Automates order import, label generation and manifest submission through Royal Mail’s Click & Drop platform. Simpler authentication, lower volume threshold, covers all domestic Royal Mail services.

100–1,000+/day

Pro Shipping API

For higher volume operations needing direct control over service selection, label formats, EORI/IOSS data for international orders and automated manifest submission. More complex authentication via OAuth 2.0.

1,000+/day

Mailmark API

For large-scale fulfilment processing over 1,000 items daily. Discounted postage rates, barcode-level tracking and enterprise-grade automation. Royal Mail approval required.

Who uses a Royal Mail API integration.

01

Ecommerce businesses on WooCommerce or custom platforms

When an order is placed, the integration automatically creates the Royal Mail shipment, generates the label and prints it, sends the tracking number to the customer and updates the order status — without anyone touching it. The daily manual process of logging into Click & Drop, importing orders and printing labels is eliminated entirely. For businesses spending 30–60 minutes a day on manual despatch, the time saving is immediate.

02

Subscription box and recurring despatch businesses

For subscription businesses sending regular despatch runs, the integration triggers bulk label creation on a schedule, automatically selects the right service for each package based on weight and value, exports manifests without manual steps and handles service upgrades for high-value boxes. The despatch day runs from a single trigger rather than requiring anyone to work through the portal manually.

03

Multi-channel sellers with bespoke order management systems

Businesses selling across their own site, Amazon, eBay and wholesale often have a custom OMS that needs to push shipments directly to Royal Mail without going through a third-party plugin. The integration connects directly to the OMS, reads order data, creates shipments and writes tracking numbers back — compatible with any platform that can make an HTTP request.

04

High-volume despatch operations

At the higher end, the integration handles Tracked 24/48 service selection automatically based on order value, delivery speed chosen at checkout and package dimensions, routes labels directly to thermal printers in ZPL format, submits manifests before each collection window, and handles failed delivery events from the tracking API to trigger automatic customer notifications.

05

Businesses with custom service selection requirements

Plugins offer a single service or a basic weight band dropdown. A custom integration implements your specific rules: orders over £75 on Special Delivery, items over 750g on Tracked 48 Parcel, next-day orders placed before 1pm on Tracked 24, international orders routed to the correct international tracked service by destination. Configured once, applied automatically to every order.

Why a plugin won’t cut it.

Royal Mail plugins exist for WooCommerce and handle common scenarios. The limits become apparent quickly when your requirements go beyond a single default service.

Custom service selection

Plugins offer weight bands or a manual dropdown. A custom integration applies your rules automatically — value thresholds, delivery speed options, product categories, destination-based selection — on every order.

Automated manifest submission

Plugins don’t submit manifests automatically. A missed manifest delays your entire day’s collection. The integration submits on a schedule, every day, without anyone having to remember.

No third-party dependency

You own the code outright. No ongoing SaaS fees, no vendor risk, no waiting on a plugin developer to release a WooCommerce-compatible update after a major version change.

Thermal printer support

Plugins generate PDFs. A custom integration routes ZPL labels directly to thermal printers — Zebra, Dymo, BIXOLON — so labels print automatically without anyone clicking.

How a Royal Mail API integration is built.

Scoped before anything is built. Fixed price agreed in writing. Tested against real orders before handover.

01

Scoping

We establish your despatch volume, platform, Royal Mail account type, service selection rules and any custom requirements. This determines which API product is appropriate and what the build involves.

02

Fixed-price quote

Clear, itemised quote before work begins. Scope agreed in writing. No surprises mid-project.

03

API authentication and sandbox setup

Royal Mail API credentials configured, authentication implemented, and the full integration built and tested against the sandbox environment before connecting to your live account.

04

Build and integration

Shipment creation, label generation, service selection logic, thermal printer routing, tracking capture and manifest submission all built and integrated with your platform or OMS to specification.

05

Testing and handover

End-to-end testing with real orders across all service types and edge cases. Error handling and alerts configured. Complete technical documentation — you own the code with no ongoing dependency on me.

Royal Mail API FAQ.

Do I need a Royal Mail business account before the build can start?

Yes — you need an active Royal Mail OBA (Online Business Account) and to register as an API developer through the Royal Mail Developer Portal. For Click & Drop, registration is straightforward and typically approved within a few days. For Pro Shipping, Royal Mail requires a brief approval process. I advise on the right account type during scoping.

What’s the difference between Click & Drop and Pro Shipping?

Click & Drop is Royal Mail’s platform for small to medium volume businesses, typically up to around 1,000 items per day. It has simpler authentication and is easier to get access to. Pro Shipping is a more direct API for higher-volume or more complex operations, offering greater control over label formats, service selection and international shipment data. Most businesses start with Click & Drop. The scoping call determines which is right for your volume and requirements.

Can the integration handle Tracked 24, Tracked 48 and Special Delivery automatically?

Yes — service selection is one of the key advantages of a custom integration over a plugin. The integration applies your rules automatically: orders over a value threshold use Special Delivery; next-day shipping options use Tracked 24; standard options use Tracked 48; large items use the parcel format rather than large letter. Configured once and applied to every order without manual decisions at despatch.

Can it print labels directly to my thermal printer?

Yes. The integration can request labels in ZPL format from the Royal Mail API and route them directly to a configured Zebra, Dymo or BIXOLON thermal printer via TCP/IP. Labels print automatically the moment a shipment is created — no PDFs to download, no clicking print. This is included in the Pro Shipping and Mailmark tiers and can be added to Click & Drop builds.

What happens if the Royal Mail API is unavailable?

The integration implements retry logic for temporary unavailability — automatic retries with backoff for transient errors. If the API is unavailable for an extended period, the integration flags affected orders for manual review and sends an alert. No orders are silently lost — every failure is logged and actionable.

Can it handle international shipments with EORI and IOSS data?

Yes. International shipments requiring EORI numbers, IOSS registration, customs commodity codes and declared values are fully supported in the Pro Shipping and Mailmark builds. The integration reads the relevant data from your order management system and includes it correctly in the shipment creation request for each international destination.

What platforms can it integrate with?

Any platform with a database and server-side code — WooCommerce, custom PHP or Laravel applications, Python or Node.js systems, bespoke order management systems. The integration sits between your platform and the Royal Mail API. If your platform can fire an event when an order is placed, the integration can handle the rest.

How long does a Royal Mail API integration take?

Click & Drop integrations typically take one to two weeks. Pro Shipping builds take two to three weeks. Mailmark and enterprise builds take three to four weeks. Timeline starts once your Royal Mail API credentials are in hand, scope is agreed and the deposit is paid.
