What the Companies House API gives you

Companies House runs a free, official API to the public register of UK companies. It returns the company name and number, status, registered address, incorporation date, SIC codes, officers, persons with significant control (PSCs) and filing history.

The API costs nothing. The work is in building the integration properly: keeping the key secure, staying inside the rate limits, mapping the data into your system and handling the awkward cases, such as dissolved companies, LLPs and numbers that don't exist. See the Companies House API gotchas.

Who it's for

  • Lenders and finance brokers Company status, age, address and directors pulled into your credit checks automatically, with a record of every lookup.
  • Recruitment agencies Check a client company when it's added to your CRM, and flag dissolved, dormant or struck-off companies before a placement goes ahead. See Companies House for recruitment agencies.
  • Law firms Client intake filled in automatically, director and PSC data for conflict checks, and a warning on companies in administration before a matter opens.
  • Property professionals Verified buyer or seller company details in your case management system from day one.
  • B2B platforms Collect a company number at sign-up and fill in the rest automatically: address, SIC code, incorporation date and directors. Accountants can go further and onboard clients into Xero.

Why custom rather than a compliance tool

Tools like SmartSearch bundle Companies House data into wider AML checks, and they're fine for standard onboarding. They charge per check, and the data stays in their dashboard. A custom integration makes sense when the data needs to live in your own system, or when your volume makes per-check pricing expensive. Thinking of scraping the website instead? Read why the API is the better route.

How it's built

  • Inside the rate limits Companies House allows a set number of requests in each five-minute window. Lookups are cached and bulk checks are queued, so a busy day or a big import never gets your key blocked.
  • Every kind of company handled Company numbers come in different formats, such as Scottish companies starting SC, Northern Irish companies starting NI and LLPs starting OC. Searches handle all of them, and statuses like dissolved, in liquidation or in administration are flagged clearly.
  • Officers and owners Directors, secretaries and people with significant control are pulled in with their appointment dates, so you can see who's behind a company and when that changed.
  • Filings when you need them The latest accounts, confirmation statements and other filings can be listed, and the documents themselves fetched as PDFs.
  • Changes as they happen Companies House offers a streaming service that announces changes to the register as they happen. For platforms that need to know the moment a client company changes its directors, address or status, the integration can watch for changes instead of checking each company on a schedule.

What's included

  • API key stored securely on the server, never in the browser
  • Company search by name or number
  • Clear handling of dissolved, dormant, LLP and overseas companies, timeouts and rate limits
  • Caching, so repeat lookups don't hit the API
  • A handover document, and the code is yours

Not included: AML, sanctions or fraud screening, structured financial figures, and changes to your platform outside the integration.

Payment for Starter and Standard is 50% to start and the balance on completion. Plus is split into three: 40% to start, 30% at the halfway point and 30% on completion. For what drives the price, read what a Companies House integration costs.

Questions

Is the Companies House API free?

Yes. There are no per-search fees or subscriptions, just a rate limit of 600 requests every five minutes. You only pay for building the integration.

Does it return financial figures from company accounts?

No. Filed accounts come back as PDF documents, not as turnover or profit figures you can search. For structured financial data you need a credit reference agency.

Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. The register covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the build handles the different company number formats. Channel Islands and Isle of Man companies aren't on it.

Do I need a Companies House developer account?

Yes. It's free and registered in your name, so you're never dependent on me for access. I'll tell you exactly what to set up.

Will it work with my CRM or platform?

If your system has an API, accepts webhooks or has a database the integration can write to, yes. Tell me what it's built on in your spec and I'll tell you how it connects.

What if Companies House changes the API?

Changes are announced in advance. On the optional retainer, updates are covered. Without it, I quote for the change.
