What the DPD API gives you

DPD's API creates shipments, generates labels, returns tracking data and handles returns labels. Connected to your shop or platform, despatch runs itself: the order comes in, the shipment and label are created, and the tracking details go back to the order and the customer. DPD's delivery-hour tracking can feed your own customer updates too. See the DPD API integration guide.

Who it's for

  • WooCommerce and custom shops Orders go straight to DPD with no copying and pasting, saving time at despatch every day and cutting out typing errors. See DPD and WooCommerce.
  • Shops with delivery options Next day, two day or a timed service chosen automatically from the checkout option and the order's cut-off time.
  • Busy despatch benches Labels in ZPL format sent straight to a thermal printer the moment the shipment is created, with no PDFs to download.
  • Shops that want branded tracking DPD tracking events, including the delivery hour, shown on your own site, with "out for delivery" messages sent automatically. See DPD tracking integration.
  • Shops using DPD and Royal Mail One integration that sends next-day and larger parcels to DPD and letters and small parcels to Royal Mail. See DPD vs Royal Mail API and Evri vs DPD.

Why custom rather than a plugin

DPD plugins for WooCommerce cover a basic setup. They usually offer one default service, produce PDFs only and handle one carrier. A custom build follows your own rules, prints straight to a thermal printer, can route between carriers, and doesn't break when a plugin update goes wrong.

How it's built

  • Shipments created from the order Address, weight, parcel count and the service the customer chose come straight from your order, so the despatch bench never retypes anything.
  • Cut-off times respected Orders placed after your cut-off are booked for the next working day's collection automatically, and next day or timed services are only offered when they can actually be met.
  • Addresses checked first DPD rejects shipments with addresses it can't route. Problem addresses are caught when the order comes in, not at the despatch bench, so you can fix them before the van arrives.
  • DPD's own delivery messages switched on The customer's email and mobile number are passed to DPD, so DPD's one-hour delivery window notifications reach them. That's one of the main reasons customers like DPD, and it costs you nothing extra.
  • Labels to a thermal printer Labels can be printed straight to a thermal printer in the format it understands, with no PDFs to open, and reprinted from your admin if one jams.
  • Returns built in Returns labels can be created from the order, so a customer return doesn't mean starting from scratch.

What's included

  • DPD credentials stored securely on the server
  • Built and tested in DPD's test environment first, so no real labels or collections are made
  • Clear handling of address failures, weight limits and DPD being down
  • A handover document, and the code is yours

Not included: your DPD business account and API access, DPD's per-parcel rates, collection booking (quoted separately if you need it) and printer hardware.

Payment is 50% to start and the balance on completion. For what drives the price, read what a DPD integration costs.

How to get a price

Questions

How do I get DPD API access?

DPD doesn't have a self-serve developer portal. You ask your DPD account manager for API access on your business account. It can take anything from a few days to a couple of weeks, so ask early.

Can the API book collections?

Most shops have a standing daily DPD collection, so the API only needs to create shipments. If you don't, on-demand collection booking can be added and quoted separately.

Does it work with WooCommerce?

Yes, that's the most common build. Orders trigger the shipment, the label prints, and the tracking number and despatch email go out automatically. See the DPD and WooCommerce guide.

Can it choose the DPD service automatically?

Yes. The service is picked from the delivery option the customer chose, the time of the order and any other rules you set, so nobody chooses it by hand at despatch.

Are DPD's shipping rates included?

No. You agree per-parcel rates with DPD directly. The build price covers the integration only.

How long does the build take?

Standard takes 3–5 days, platform integration about a week and multi-carrier about two weeks, starting once your DPD credentials are through and the deposit is paid.
