Product images that do not display properly are one of the most damaging problems a Shopify store can have. Ecommerce relies on visuals more than almost any other type of website. If a customer cannot see what they are buying clearly, they will not buy it. A store with missing, broken or low-quality images loses sales quietly and consistently.
The problem can show up in different ways — images that are completely missing, images that appear broken with a placeholder icon, images that load but look blurry or stretched, or images that work on desktop but not on mobile. Each of these has a different underlying cause.
This post covers the most common reasons Shopify product images stop showing properly and what is worth checking in each case.
1. Images were not uploaded correctly
The most straightforward cause is an incomplete or failed upload. Shopify processes images when they are added to a product — if the upload was interrupted, the file was too large, or the format was not supported, the image may appear to be attached to the product in the admin but not display correctly on the storefront.
Shopify supports JPEG, PNG, GIF and WEBP formats. Files above around 20MB can cause processing issues. If images are missing on the storefront but appear to exist in the product admin, re-uploading them is often the quickest fix.
2. Theme image settings are misconfigured
Shopify themes control how product images are displayed — their aspect ratio, cropping behaviour, the number shown in the gallery, and whether they appear as thumbnails or full-width. If these settings are changed, or if a theme update has reset them, images can appear cropped incorrectly, displayed in the wrong proportion, or missing from certain parts of the product page.
Opening the theme customiser and checking the product page image settings is a good early step when images look wrong but are not technically missing. This is one of the more common issues that surfaces after a Shopify theme update.
3. Images are displaying but look blurry or low quality
Blurry images on Shopify are almost always caused by uploading images that are too small. Shopify scales images to fit the space available in the theme, and if the source image is lower resolution than the display size requires, it will look soft or pixelated.
For most Shopify themes, product images should be at least 2048 x 2048 pixels for a clean display at full size on desktop. Images smaller than around 800 pixels on the longest side will almost certainly look blurry at full product view.
The fix is to replace the images with higher resolution versions. It is also worth checking that the images are square or consistently proportioned — inconsistent aspect ratios across a product gallery create an inconsistent, unprofessional look even when the resolution is adequate.
4. Images are not showing on mobile
A product page that looks fine on desktop can still have image problems on mobile. This is often caused by theme settings that handle mobile image display differently, or by image sizes that are technically correct but load slowly enough on mobile connections to time out.
If images are missing only on mobile, check whether the theme has separate mobile image settings in the customiser. Also test on a real mobile device rather than just resizing a desktop browser window — the two do not always produce the same result. Mobile display problems are one of the most common Shopify fixes small businesses need help with.
5. A third-party app is interfering with image display
Some Shopify apps — image optimisers, product customisers, zoom tools, review apps that show product photos — interact directly with how images are displayed on the storefront. If one of these apps has a bug, a compatibility issue, or has been incorrectly configured, it can prevent images from showing properly.
Temporarily disabling image-related apps and testing the product page is a useful diagnostic step. If images reappear after disabling an app, that app is the source of the problem.
6. Variant images not switching correctly
On products with multiple variants — different colours, sizes, or styles — Shopify can be set to display a different image for each variant. If variant images are not set up correctly, clicking a variant option may not change the displayed image, or may show a blank space where the variant image should be.
This is usually a product configuration issue rather than a theme problem. Each variant that should have its own image needs that image assigned in the product admin. If variants share images or have no image assigned, the display will not behave as expected.
7. Images are very large and loading slowly
Very large image files — even if they eventually load — create a poor experience, particularly on mobile. A product page where the images take three or four seconds to appear will see high bounce rates and low conversion, even if technically nothing is “broken”.
Compressing product images before uploading is one of the simplest and most effective improvements you can make to a Shopify store. A JPEG at 85% quality and 2048px on the longest side is usually indistinguishable from the original and significantly smaller in file size. This also feeds into overall Shopify store speed, which affects both conversion and search visibility.
What to check first
- view the product page on a real mobile device and on desktop
- check whether the images are present in the product admin or genuinely missing
- check image dimensions and file size before re-uploading
- check theme customiser image settings for product pages
- disable any image-related apps temporarily and retest
- check variant image assignments if the problem relates to specific product options
Product image problems are almost always fixable once the cause is identified. The important thing is to check methodically rather than re-uploading everything at random, which wastes time and does not always address the underlying issue.
