A broken Shopify checkout is one of the most serious problems a small ecommerce store can have. Unlike a slow page or a layout issue, a checkout that does not work means customers who are ready to buy are unable to complete their purchase. Every failed transaction is a direct loss.
The frustrating part is that checkout problems in Shopify are not always obvious. The store looks fine, the product pages work, and customers can browse without any issues. But at the point of purchase, something goes wrong — and most of the time, the store owner only finds out when a customer complains or when sales drop unexpectedly.
This post covers the most common reasons a Shopify checkout stops working and what is worth checking first.
Why Shopify checkout problems are especially damaging
Most website problems affect experience or visibility. A checkout problem affects revenue directly. A customer who cannot complete a purchase does not usually try again — they leave and buy elsewhere.
This makes checkout issues different in character from other common Shopify fixes. They need identifying and resolving quickly, and they warrant more urgency than most other store problems.
1. Payment gateway issues
The most common cause of a broken checkout is a problem with the payment gateway. This can happen for several reasons:
- the payment provider account has been suspended or requires re-verification
- API keys or credentials have expired or been changed
- the payment provider has made changes to their integration that require an update on the Shopify side
- a Shopify update has affected how the payment app connects
- the payment provider is experiencing an outage
Checking the payment gateway first is almost always the right starting point when a checkout suddenly stops working.
2. Shopify Payments account issues
If you use Shopify Payments as your payment method, account-level problems can block checkout even when everything else looks fine. Common issues include:
- identity verification that has not been completed or has expired
- bank account details that need updating
- a payout hold or account review triggered by unusual activity
- selling a product type that requires additional verification
Shopify usually sends an email when account action is required, but these can be easy to miss. Checking the Payments section of your Shopify admin directly is the quickest way to spot any flags.
3. App conflicts affecting checkout
Shopify apps that interact with the checkout — discount apps, upsell tools, subscription apps, custom shipping rate calculators — can sometimes interfere with the checkout process if they have a bug, a compatibility issue with a recent Shopify update, or a conflict with another app.
A good diagnostic step is to temporarily disable any apps that interact with checkout and test whether the problem persists. If the checkout works after disabling an app, that app is likely the cause. This is similar to the approach used when plugin conflicts cause problems on WordPress sites — the process of isolating the cause is the same even though the platform is different.
4. Shipping rate configuration problems
If customers are reaching checkout but cannot proceed past the shipping step, the problem is often with how shipping rates are configured. Common causes include:
- no shipping rates set up for the customer’s country or region
- shipping zones that do not cover certain postcodes or areas
- weight or dimension thresholds on products that do not match any shipping rule
- a carrier-calculated shipping app that is returning errors or no rates
- local pickup options that have been misconfigured
Testing checkout with a product in your basket from both a UK address and another country can quickly reveal whether the problem is geographic.
5. SSL certificate or security warnings
Shopify handles SSL automatically for all stores, but if there is a custom domain involved and something has gone wrong with the domain setup, customers may see security warnings at checkout. Most browsers will block payment on a page that does not have a valid SSL certificate, either refusing to load the page or showing a warning that causes customers to abandon.
This is less common on Shopify than on self-hosted platforms, but it can happen after domain changes or DNS updates.
6. Custom checkout scripts or code errors
If custom code has been added to your checkout — through Shopify Scripts, checkout.liquid (on older plans), or checkout extensibility — and that code has an error, it can prevent checkout from loading or completing properly.
This type of problem tends to appear after a Shopify update that changes how checkout customisation works, or after a developer has made changes that have not been fully tested.
7. Browser or device-specific issues
Sometimes a checkout problem only affects certain browsers or devices. This is often caused by browser extensions blocking scripts, outdated browser versions, or a third-party script on your store that conflicts with specific browser behaviour.
Testing checkout on multiple browsers and on both mobile and desktop is an important step that is easy to skip. A checkout that works on Chrome but not Safari, or on desktop but not mobile, points to a specific compatibility issue rather than a broad platform problem.
What to do if your Shopify checkout is not working
Work through the problem methodically rather than making multiple changes at once. A good starting sequence is:
- check the Payments section of your Shopify admin for any flags or required actions
- test checkout as a customer on multiple browsers and devices
- check whether the problem affects all products or only specific ones
- temporarily disable any checkout-related apps and retest
- check shipping zones and rates for obvious gaps
- review any recent changes — app installs, theme updates, settings changes — that coincided with the problem starting
In most cases, a broken Shopify checkout has an identifiable cause once you know what to look for. The key is not to panic and start changing things at random, because that can make the diagnosis harder and sometimes introduces new problems on top of the original one.
