What it does
What the DPD API provides.
The DPD API provides programmatic access to DPD’s parcel shipping services — creating shipments, generating labels, tracking parcels in real time and managing returns. A custom integration connects DPD directly to your WooCommerce store or bespoke platform: when an order is placed, the shipment is created automatically, the label generates and prints, the tracking number writes back to the order, and the customer receives a despatch notification. Nobody logs into DPD’s portal.
DPD’s one-hour delivery window — where the recipient knows their delivery hour on the morning of delivery day — is one of its strongest differentiators. A custom integration that feeds tracking events into customer-facing notifications keeps customers informed with the same real-time data DPD uses themselves.
Who it’s for
Who uses a DPD API integration.
Ecommerce businesses on WooCommerce or custom platforms
Orders flow straight into DPD without anyone touching them. Shipment created, label generated, order status updated, tracking number in the despatch email — the entire despatch workflow runs automatically. For businesses spending 30–60 minutes per day on manual DPD despatch, the time saving is immediate and the error rate drops to near zero.
Businesses with complex service selection requirements
DPD Classic for next-day orders placed before 2pm, DPD Two Day for standard orders, DPD Express for pre-10:30am — all selected automatically based on the checkout option chosen and the order timestamp. No manual service selection decisions at despatch. Configured once, applied to every order.
High-volume operations using thermal printers
Labels in ZPL format routed directly to Zebra, Dymo or BIXOLON thermal printers the moment a shipment is created. Labels print automatically without anyone downloading a PDF or clicking print. At high despatch volumes, automatic label printing removes a manual step from every single shipment.
Businesses wanting branded tracking pages
DPD’s tracking data — including the one-hour delivery window — embedded into your own customer-facing tracking page. Customers track on your domain rather than DPD’s website. Automated “out for delivery” notifications triggered by DPD tracking events keep customers informed without anyone manually sending updates.
Multi-carrier businesses needing DPD alongside Royal Mail
DPD for next-day and higher-value parcels, Royal Mail for standard and letter-format items. A single integration layer selects the carrier automatically based on service level, package weight and dimensions. The postage cost optimisation — routing large letter format items to Royal Mail rather than DPD — typically pays for the multi-carrier build within a few months.
Why custom
Why a plugin won’t cut it.
WooCommerce DPD plugins handle basic shipment creation for standard setups. The limits become apparent quickly.
Custom service selection
Plugins offer a dropdown or a fixed default. Custom logic — cut-off time, order value, checkout choice — requires a custom build. Configured once, applied automatically to every order.
Thermal printer routing
Plugins generate PDFs. A custom integration routes ZPL labels directly to thermal printers. Labels print automatically at the moment of shipment creation — no clicks required.
Multi-carrier capability
Plugins are single-carrier. A custom integration can route orders to DPD or Royal Mail automatically based on your rules — one integration point for multiple carriers.
No update dependency
You own the code outright. WooCommerce updates don’t break it. No SaaS fees, no plugin developer to wait on.
The process
How a DPD API integration is built.
Note: DPD API credentials are provisioned by DPD through your business account — not via a self-serve portal. Start the credential request early.
Scoping
We map your despatch workflow, service selection rules, label format requirements and whether tracking events need to feed customer notifications or a tracking page.
Fixed-price quote
Clear, itemised quote before work begins. Scope agreed in writing.
DPD credentials and test environment
DPD test credentials configured. Development proceeds in the DPD test environment — shipments created in test mode don’t generate real labels or real collections.
Build and integration
Shipment creation, label generation, service selection logic, tracking integration and any thermal printer routing or returns label logic built to specification.
Testing and handover
End-to-end testing with real shipment scenarios including edge cases. Full documentation. You own the code.

Common questions
DPD API FAQ.
How do I get DPD API access?
DPD doesn’t have a self-serve developer portal. API credentials are provisioned by DPD through your business account manager. Contact your DPD account manager to request API access — they’ll provide your account number, username and password for the DPD API. This typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks. Start the request early so it doesn’t delay the build go-live.
Do I need a standing daily collection or can the API book collections?
Most ecommerce businesses have a standing daily DPD collection arranged directly with DPD — the driver turns up at an agreed time regardless of what the API does. For businesses without a standing collection, the API supports querying available slots and booking on-demand. This is available as a scoped add-on — the complexity depends on whether a date/time selector UI is needed.
Can it work with WooCommerce?
Yes — WooCommerce integration is the most common DPD build. Orders trigger shipment creation on status change, labels generate and print, tracking numbers write back to the WooCommerce order and despatch emails go to the customer automatically. See the DPD API WooCommerce guide.
Can it handle DPD Classic, Express and Two Day automatically?
Yes — service selection is one of the key advantages of a custom integration. The service code is chosen automatically based on the delivery option the customer selected at checkout, the order timestamp (for cut-off time logic) and any other rules you define. No manual service selection at despatch.
Can it work alongside Royal Mail?
Yes — the Multi-carrier tier combines DPD and Royal Mail in the same integration layer with automatic carrier selection. See the DPD vs Royal Mail API comparison for when each carrier makes sense.
How long does the build take?
Standard takes 3–5 days. Platform Integration takes approximately one week. Multi-carrier takes approximately two weeks. Timeline starts once DPD credentials are available, scope is agreed and the deposit is paid.
Shipping integrations like this are something I build into web design for Blackburn businesses, and they go hand in hand with ongoing SEO support that grows your orders over time.
