Paul the Handyman website

Case study · Blackburn

Paul the Handyman

How I designed and built the Paul the Handyman website in Blackburn, with local service pages, supporting content and the local SEO work behind it.

One website, the whole of East Lancashire

Most businesses in East Lancashire don't work in one town. A roofer in Accrington takes jobs in Oswaldtwistle, Great Harwood and Haslingden. A Clitheroe caterer works weddings across the Ribble Valley. An electrician in Burnley covers Padiham, Nelson and Colne. Your website needs to show up across all of that, without turning into a wall of town names.

The way to do it is straightforward. Give each main service its own page. Name the towns you cover where they naturally fit, in headings, in the text and in your FAQs. Set up your Google Business Profile with the right service area, and ask customers in each town for a review. That combination ranks across a whole area from one tidy website, which is what I build.

What a good local website does

Whatever the town, the small business sites that bring in work have the same few things in common:

  • They load fast on a phone Most local searches happen on mobile, and a slow page loses the visitor before they've read anything.
  • Each service has its own page "Boiler repairs in Burnley" needs a page about boiler repairs. One page listing everything won't rank for any of it. See why separate service pages matter.
  • They say where you work The towns and villages you cover appear naturally in your headings and text.
  • They make contact easy A clear way to message you on every page and a form that actually reaches your inbox.
  • They match your Google Business Profile The same name, address and phone number on both, so Google trusts them. See Google Business Profile or a proper website?

Proof it works across several towns

The Paul the Handyman website is built exactly this way: one page per service, with the towns it covers named across the site. It's based in Blackburn, but by late March 2026 it was ranking well beyond it:

Search Google position
Handyman Rossendale 3
Handyman Clitheroe 4
Handyman Darwen 5
Handyman Accrington 6

Snapshot recorded 28 March 2026. Positions vary with location, device and personalisation.

No separate page for each town, no keyword stuffing. Just clear service pages, local details in the right places and a site Google can understand.

Areas covered

  • Burnley and Pendle Burnley, Padiham, Nelson, Brierfield, Barrowford and Colne. A lot of trades and engineering firms, and a competitive market for the common trade searches, so service pages and reviews matter.
  • Hyndburn Accrington, Oswaldtwistle, Clayton-le-Moors, Church, Great Harwood and Rishton. Mostly trades and independent shops, where a fast, simple site with clear prices often beats a slow, flashy one.
  • Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley Clitheroe, Whalley, Longridge, Sabden and the villages around them. Hospitality, holiday lets, farm shops and venues alongside trades, where good photos and an easy enquiry or booking route make the difference.
  • Rossendale Rawtenstall, Haslingden, Bacup and Whitworth. Trades and local services covering the valley and over into Bury and Rochdale.

Closer to home, see web design in Blackburn and Darwen. Further west, see web design in Preston.

Who I build for

Mostly trades and local service businesses: plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers, joiners, handymen, landscapers and cleaners. See websites for trades, with designs made for each trade from £199. I also build sites for shops, cafés, holiday lets and professional services, and Shopify or WooCommerce stores for businesses that sell online.

Which package

  • One-page site, £199 Everything on a single page: what you do, where you work and how to get in touch. Right for a new business or a sole trader who mostly needs something credible to send people to.
  • Multi-page website, £699 A page for each service, FAQ sections and detailed on-page SEO. The one to choose if you want work from Google across several towns.
  • Online shop, from £699 Shopify or WooCommerce, with products, payments and shipping set up.

Every package includes mobile-first design, local SEO set up before launch, Google Search Console, working contact forms and a proper handover. See web design in Blackburn for everything that's included.

How it works

  1. Message me by WhatsApp, text, email or the form with what the business does and the towns you cover.
  2. Get a fixed price within 24 hours, in writing, with a date.
  3. Pay 50% to start. I write the content and build the site, then send you a preview link.
  4. Go live once you're happy, and pay the other 50%.

Getting found once it's live

A new site is only the start. If you want to show up in the map results and for "[your trade] near me" searches, local SEO sorts your Google Business Profile, page titles and service pages. For what that involves, read how to get more local enquiries from your website. If your site just needs looking after, the £20 a month care plan covers hosting, updates and small edits.

Questions

Do you work with businesses outside Blackburn?

Yes. I'm based in Blackburn and most of my work is across East Lancashire, but it's all done by WhatsApp, text and email, so where you are makes no difference to the price or the timescale.

How much does a website cost?

Fixed prices start at £199 for a one-page site and £699 for a multi-page service website or an online shop. Hosting and a domain are about £60 a year on top. You get a written price before any work starts.

Should my site have a page for every town?

Usually not. A page per main service, with the areas you cover named naturally, works better than a stack of near-identical town pages, which Google treats as thin content. A separate page for a town only makes sense when you have something genuinely different to say about it, such as a branch there or a body of local work to show.

I cover a wide area. Can one website rank in several towns?

Yes. Strong service pages, a well set up Google Business Profile with your service area, and reviews from customers in those towns do most of the work. The handyman site I built ranks in Blackburn, Darwen, Rossendale, Clitheroe and Accrington from one set of service pages.

How long does it take?

A one-page site is usually live within a week, and most multi-page sites within 2 to 4 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly your content and photos come together. You get a date with the quote.

Can you improve my existing site instead?

Often, yes. Fixes to WordPress and Shopify sites start at £49 per fix, and the local SEO setup sorts titles, service pages and your Google Business Profile without a rebuild.
