Case study · Blackburn

Paul the Handyman

How I designed and built the Paul the Handyman website in Blackburn, with local service pages, supporting content and the local SEO work behind it.

What gets fixed

  • Your Google Business Profile For most local searches the map results sit above everything else. I make sure your profile is complete and accurate: the right categories, services, service area, opening hours and photos, plus a simple way to ask happy customers for reviews.
  • Your page titles and descriptions These are what people see in Google before they click. Most small business sites have titles like "Home" or the business name on its own. Each page should say what you do and where.
  • A page for each service One page that lists everything you do won't rank for any of it. A page for each main service, naming the towns you cover, gives Google something specific to show. See why separate service pages matter.
  • Internal links Your most important pages need links pointing at them from the rest of your site. It's one of the quickest wins, and one of the most often missed.
  • The technical basics HTTPS, a sitemap in Google Search Console, mobile layout and speed, and making sure nothing is telling Google to stay away. More often than you'd think, a site is blocking search engines without anyone knowing.
  • Turning visits into enquiries Being found is only half of it. Every page should make it obvious how to get in touch.

What it looks like when it works

Paul the Handyman is a Blackburn property maintenance business. I built the site from scratch in August 2025 and did the local SEO work on it: a page for each service, the towns covered named properly, internal links from supporting articles to the main pages, and titles that say what and where. By late March 2026 it was ranking for searches like these:

Search Google position
Handyman Blackburn 2
Property maintenance Blackburn 4
Property maintenance landlords Blackburn 1
Handyman Rossendale 3
Tap repair Blackburn 3
Bath resealing Blackburn 1

Snapshot recorded 28 March 2026. Positions vary with location, device and personalisation.

Notice which searches did best: specific jobs in a specific town. That's where local SEO pays off first, because the competition is thinner and the person searching is ready to book. The broad, busy searches follow as the site earns trust.

Reviews, the honest way

Reviews are the strongest local ranking signal most small businesses aren't using. You don't need tricks, you need a habit. Ask every happy customer at the moment they're happiest, usually when the job's finished or the order has arrived, and make it one tap for them by sending your Google review link by WhatsApp or text. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a sentence or two. Ten genuine reviews from local customers will do more for you than any amount of fiddling with the website.

Setup includes your review link and a short message you can send to customers. Never buy reviews or offer anything in exchange for them. Google removes them and can suspend the profile.

What monthly support covers

Monthly SEO is for businesses that want to keep climbing after the fixes are in. Each month I work through the next most useful jobs on the list: improving a service page that's close to page one, adding a new page for a service or area you want more of, writing a guide that answers a question your customers ask, building internal links, and keeping your Google Business Profile active with posts and updates. You get a short note of what was done and what's next. There's no contract, so if it isn't worth it to you, stop.

How it works

  1. Send me your website address by WhatsApp, text, email or the form, with the searches you'd like to show up for.
  2. I look over the site and reply within 24 hours with what I'd do and a fixed price.
  3. You pick the package. The audit gives you a written list to work through yourself. With setup, I make the changes for you.
  4. Monthly is optional. If you want it to keep improving, I add content and keep working through the list. There's no contract, so you can stop whenever you like.

What I won't do

No bought links, no fake reviews and no pages stuffed with town names. These can get a site penalised, and they're hard to undo. I also won't send you a 40-page report full of charts. You get a short list of what was done and what comes next.

Areas covered

Blackburn and Darwen, plus Accrington, Burnley, Clitheroe and the rest of East Lancashire, and Preston. For what local SEO usually costs and what it should include, read how much local SEO costs in Blackburn and what local SEO includes.

Questions

How long does local SEO take to work?

Fixes to page titles and your Google Business Profile can show in a few weeks. Most small businesses see a clear change within 3 to 6 months. Busy searches in bigger towns take longer.

Can you guarantee first place on Google?

No, and nobody honest can. What I can do is fix what is holding your site back and tell you plainly what the rest will take.

Do I need a new website first?

Usually not. Most sites I see need better titles, clearer service pages and a sorted Google Business Profile, not a rebuild. If yours really does need rebuilding, the audit will say so.

What's the difference between the audit and the setup?

The audit is a written list of what's holding your site back, in order of importance, for you or your web person to work through. With setup, I make those changes for you, including your Google Business Profile, titles, service pages and internal links.

Do you write content as part of SEO?

Yes. Setup improves your existing service pages, and monthly support adds new pages and guides where they'll bring in the searches you want.

Is there a contract for monthly SEO?

No. It's month to month. Stop whenever you like.

Do you only work in Blackburn?

No. Most of my local SEO work is in Blackburn and East Lancashire, but it's all done remotely, so I work with businesses anywhere in the UK.
