WordPress vs Volcanic for a Recruitment Website: An Honest Comparison

26 April 2026 5 min read

Volcanic is the market-leading specialist recruitment website platform in the UK. WordPress is the most widely used website platform in the world. Both can power a recruitment agency website with a job board and ATS integration. They approach the problem from completely different directions, and the right choice depends on your agency’s size, budget, technical appetite and growth plans.

This is an honest comparison — not a sales pitch for either. I build custom WordPress recruitment websites, so you should know that upfront. I’ll explain where Volcanic is genuinely the better choice and where it isn’t.

What Volcanic (Access Attract) actually is

Volcanic was a standalone specialist recruitment website platform that was acquired by Access Group and rebranded as Access Attract Evo. It’s a SaaS product built specifically for recruitment agencies — you pay a monthly subscription and get a hosted website with recruitment-specific features built in: job board, candidate portal, ATS integrations, employer portal, analytics dashboard.

The model is platform-as-a-service. You don’t own the code. You don’t host it yourself. You pay monthly to use their platform, and the features you get are the features they’ve built.

What WordPress is in this context

WordPress is an open-source CMS. In the context of a recruitment website, it’s the foundation that a developer builds your site on. The recruitment-specific features — job board, ATS integration, filtering, candidate application forms — are built as custom functionality on top of WordPress. You own the code. You host it. If you want to change developer, you take the site with you.

The cost comparison

Volcanic / Access Attract pricing is not publicly listed. Based on market information, typical monthly fees for a standard setup are in the £200–£500 range, with initial setup fees of £500–£2,000. Over three years, that’s £7,200 to £20,000 in platform fees, not including setup.

A custom WordPress recruitment website at the Full Integration tier costs £2,499 as a one-off fixed fee, plus £39 per month for hosting and support. Over three years, that’s approximately £3,900 total. For most agencies under £5m revenue, the cost difference over three years is significant. The WordPress build pays for itself within the first year compared to a mid-range Volcanic subscription.

Where Volcanic is genuinely better

Larger and more complex agencies. Volcanic is designed for agencies with sophisticated requirements — multi-brand sites, complex candidate portal functionality, high-volume job feeds, enterprise ATS configurations. If you have 500 active jobs, multiple divisions with separate candidate audiences, and a complex Bullhorn setup with custom workflows, Volcanic has invested heavily in solving those problems.

Ongoing platform development. Volcanic is continuously developing its platform — new integrations, new features, platform improvements. These roll out to all customers. With a custom WordPress site, new features are quoted as additional development work.

Enterprise ATS integrations. Volcanic has deep, pre-built integrations with Bullhorn, Vincere and other major platforms that have been developed and refined over many clients.

Where WordPress is better

Small to mid-size agencies. For an agency posting 10–100 jobs, with a standard Bullhorn or Vincere setup, the platform sophistication of Volcanic is overkill. You’re paying for complexity you don’t need and won’t use.

No lock-in. With Volcanic, if you want to leave, you start again. With WordPress, you own everything. Moving hosting or changing developer is straightforward.

SEO flexibility. WordPress gives you complete control over page structure, URL patterns, schema markup, and technical SEO elements. If ranking sector and location pages is a priority, WordPress gives you more room to do it right.

Budget certainty. A one-off fixed fee for the build, then a flat monthly hosting cost, with no price increases unless you choose to commission new features.

Other specialist platforms

RecruiterWEB, Fast Recruitment Websites, and similar UK specialist platforms operate on similar subscription models at the lower end. Their pricing is typically lower than Volcanic (£50–£200 per month) and their feature sets are more limited, which suits smaller or newer agencies. The same comparison applies: over three years, a custom WordPress build is typically cheaper, offers more flexibility, and has no lock-in.

The honest conclusion

If you’re a large UK recruitment agency with complex requirements and budget that makes the Volcanic subscription manageable — Volcanic is worth evaluating. If you’re a small to mid-size agency looking for a professional website with a working job board and ATS integration at a predictable cost with no lock-in — a custom WordPress build is almost certainly the better decision.
