GoCardless API Integration Cost: What to Expect in the UK

27 April 2026 7 min read

The GoCardless API is free to access — there are no developer fees or API licence charges beyond GoCardless’s standard transaction fees (0.5% + 20p per Bacs payment, capped at £4). The cost of integration is purely the development work: building the mandate flow, handling the async payment lifecycle, processing webhooks, and connecting everything to your existing platform. That development cost ranges from £995 for a standard Direct Debit integration to £2,495 or more for a full open banking and Direct Debit hybrid build with Xero reconciliation.

Three build tiers

Standard Direct Debit: £995

A clean GoCardless Direct Debit integration covering the core use case — mandate creation, recurring payment scheduling, webhook handling for confirmed and failed payments, and failed payment retry logic. Mandate creation flow built into your platform (hosted or custom), payments created against mandates on your billing schedule, and webhook events processed correctly with the appropriate actions triggered: confirmation emails, access provisioning, suspension on non-payment.

Suitable for SaaS platforms with fixed recurring billing, membership organisations collecting monthly or annual fees, and service businesses replacing manual bank transfer collection with automated Direct Debit. Timeline: approximately one to two weeks.

Variable billing and platform integration: £1,995

Everything in the Standard tier, plus variable amount Direct Debit collection, full access provisioning logic based on payment status, and integration with your existing platform CRM or database. Variable amounts against existing mandates for usage-based or invoice-driven billing. Access suspended on payment failure after a configurable grace period, reinstated immediately on payment confirmation. Xero or accounting system reconciliation via OAuth. For SaaS platforms with usage-based pricing, professional services firms automating B2B invoice collection, and businesses integrating GoCardless into an existing workflow rather than deploying it standalone.

Timeline: approximately two weeks.

Open banking suite: from £2,495

Combined GoCardless Direct Debit and Instant Bank Pay integration for businesses that need both mechanisms. Recurring billing via Direct Debit for ongoing subscriptions, Instant Bank Pay for initial sign-up confirmation, one-off payments or failed Direct Debit recovery. The open banking payment flow involves redirecting the customer to their bank for immediate authorisation — different architecture from the Direct Debit mandate flow, more complex to implement correctly. Scope varies significantly at this level depending on the payment flows required — quoted individually after scoping.

Timeline: three weeks or more depending on scope.

What drives the cost up

Custom mandate creation UI. GoCardless’s hosted mandate page is fast to implement. Building a custom mandate flow embedded in your own UI using GoCardless’s Billing Request API takes longer but gives a seamless brand experience. Custom UI is worth it for high-value customer onboarding journeys where keeping the customer on your domain matters.

Complex access provisioning logic. Simple access provisioning — active when paid, suspended when not — is straightforward. Complex logic with grace periods, trial periods, partial access tiers, team or seat-based provisioning, and multi-product access rules takes more time to design and test correctly.

Xero or accounting system integration. Adding reconciliation to the Standard tier increases scope by roughly half a week. The GoCardless OAuth flow and Xero OAuth flow are separate authentications that need to be managed alongside each other. Worth doing if manual reconciliation is a current pain point — eliminates the daily matching work entirely.

SEPA Direct Debit for European payments. UK Bacs and SEPA are different schemes with different mandate requirements and different processing timelines. Businesses collecting from both UK and European bank accounts need the integration to handle both schemes correctly, which adds scope.

Legacy platform integration. Connecting GoCardless to a well-documented modern REST API is straightforward. Integrating with a legacy billing system, a platform with limited API access, or a bespoke CRM with unusual data structures takes longer.

What drives the cost down

Fixed amount recurring billing only. Same amount, same day each period, straightforward mandate creation. No variable amounts, no usage-based calculation. This is the simplest GoCardless use case and produces the cleanest, fastest build.

Hosted mandate page. Using GoCardless’s hosted mandate page rather than a custom embedded flow removes a meaningful chunk of UI build time. The customer is redirected to GoCardless to authorise the mandate and redirected back when complete. Not the most seamless experience, but perfectly functional and significantly faster to implement.

GoCardless credentials already in hand. GoCardless live account setup requires identity verification which can take a few days. If the live account is already verified and API credentials are ready when the build starts, development begins immediately.

Ongoing costs

GoCardless’s API is free to access. Transaction fees are 0.5% + 20p per UK Bacs payment, capped at £4. There are no additional API costs. An optional retainer of £49/month covers API monitoring and updates if GoCardless changes their API or webhook format, minor bug fixes and credential management. New features are quoted separately.

Build timeline and what to have ready

The timeline for a GoCardless integration starts once three things are in place: your GoCardless live account is verified and API credentials are available, the scope is agreed and the deposit is paid, and access to your existing platform (staging environment, API credentials, codebase) is provided.

DVLA and DVSA credentials require external approval and can add waiting time. GoCardless live account approval is entirely within GoCardless’s control — identity verification for live accounts typically takes 1–3 days. Sandbox access is immediate and the entire integration can be built and tested in sandbox before the live credentials arrive, so the wait doesn’t necessarily delay the build.

What to have ready before the build starts: an active GoCardless account (sandbox access is sufficient to begin, live credentials needed for go-live), clear specification of the payment model (fixed or variable, billing frequency, access provisioning rules), and access to the platform the integration needs to connect to.

Comparing GoCardless integration cost with alternatives

The main alternative to a custom GoCardless integration for recurring billing is a GoCardless plugin for WooCommerce or a third-party recurring billing tool. Plugins cost £50–£200 per year but are limited to fixed recurring amounts, standard WooCommerce order structures and whatever scenarios the plugin developer chose to support. Variable billing, custom access provisioning logic, Xero reconciliation and integration with non-WooCommerce platforms all require a custom build.

Third-party recurring billing platforms like Chargebee or Recurly charge monthly fees based on revenue — typically 0.5–1% of monthly recurring revenue above a free tier. For a business with £50,000 monthly recurring revenue, that’s £250–£500 per month, or £3,000–£6,000 per year, every year. A custom integration at £1,995 pays for itself in well under 12 months for businesses at that scale, with no ongoing platform fees and full ownership of the code.
