DVLA Vehicle Enquiry API Integration Cost in the UK

The DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service API is free to use — no per-lookup charges once you’re registered. The cost of integration is purely the development work: building the proxy, authenticating with the API, parsing the response, connecting it to your platform and handling edge cases correctly. That development cost ranges from £595 for a straightforward lookup and auto-populate build to £1,495 for a combined DVLA plus DVSA MOT integration.

Three build tiers

Standard lookup: £595

A registration input that calls the DVLA API and returns vehicle details — make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, year, tax status and MOT expiry. Suitable for auto-populating a form, displaying vehicle data on a listing page, or triggering a basic workflow when a registration is entered. The API key is stored server-side, all calls go through a secure proxy. Error handling covers invalid registrations, SORN vehicles, vehicles with no MOT, and API unavailability. Full technical documentation included.

Timeline: approximately 3–5 days.

Platform integration: £995

Everything in the standard lookup, plus the integration wired into your existing platform workflow. Results stored to your database or CRM when a lookup runs. Display built to match your platform’s design. Lookup triggered by your existing workflow events — new vehicle added to inventory, customer entering their registration in a part-exchange tool, finance application submitted. Live status display on public-facing pages pulling current data from DVLA rather than stored values. Suitable for dealer management systems, part-exchange tools, fleet platforms and any application where DVLA data needs to be part of an existing workflow.

Timeline: approximately one week.

Combined DVLA + DVSA MOT: £1,495

DVLA vehicle data plus DVSA MOT history in a single integration. One registration lookup returns the full picture: vehicle details and current status from DVLA, complete MOT test history with mileage, results and advisories from DVSA. The DVSA OAuth 2.0 authentication is handled transparently — token acquisition, 60-minute caching, automatic refresh. Both APIs are called in parallel where possible to keep response times fast. Mileage consistency checking across MOT history can be included — flagging discrepancies automatically.

This is the most common tier for used car dealer websites and fleet management systems where both current vehicle status and historical data are required. Timeline: approximately one to one-and-a-half weeks.

What drives the cost up

Complex existing systems. Integrating DVLA data into a clean modern platform with a documented REST API is fast. Connecting to a legacy dealer management system or a platform with restricted API access takes longer.

Multiple trigger points. A single lookup triggered from one place is the simplest scope. If DVLA data needs to be pulled at multiple points in a workflow — at stock entry, at listing publication, at part-exchange enquiry — that’s additional scope.

Custom display requirements. Standard display of vehicle data is fast to build. Bespoke visualisations, interactive mileage charts for MOT history, or custom badge designs take more time.

Bulk lookups. Fleet operators who need to check hundreds of registrations simultaneously rather than one at a time require different architecture — batching, rate limit management, scheduled jobs rather than on-demand lookups.

What drives the cost down

WooCommerce or a clean modern platform. Well-documented platforms with standard data structures are fast to integrate with. The DVLA API side is always the same — it’s the platform receiving the data that determines complexity.

Standard display. A clean, standard display of vehicle details — label, value pairs or a simple card — is fast to build. The more standard the requirements, the faster the build.

DVLA credentials already in hand. DVLA registration and approval takes a few days to a couple of weeks. If credentials are already approved when the build starts, development begins immediately.

Ongoing costs

The DVLA VES API is free with no per-lookup charges. The DVSA MOT API is also free. For the combined build, an optional retainer of £49/month covers API monitoring, credential rotation (DVSA client secrets expire every two years) and updates if either government agency changes their API endpoints or authentication requirements.
